Five police officers have been suspended in Grenada in a move that Police Commissioner James Clarkson said was aimed at rooting out undesirables from the Royal Grenada Police Force.

Clarkson said, "Our officers will be held accountable for their actions and must be an example to the communities in which they serve.”

According to a report from CMC, the Commissioner said that "any officer found breaking the law, and or violating the police standing orders will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.”

One of the suspended officers has been charged with indecent assault and charges against the other officers were laid following reports the policemen brutally beat a group young men.

The five officers have been suspended with half pay until the outcome of their cases.

Commissioner of Police in Grenada, James Clarkson has ordered an investigation into the conduct of a number of police officers after reviewing a video recording that was brought to his attention.

The video recording showed police officers  arresting a suspect  on Monday, August 11, 2008 outside the National Stadium during Carnival Pageant.

Although the incident was not recorded in its entirety, the images seen on the video, according to a police release, were very disturbing and such behaviour will not be condoned and/or encouraged within the ranks of the Royal Grenada Police Force, said Clarkson.

“Based on what we have seen, the methods and approach used by some of the officers while executing their duties in this particular matter was unprofessional,” the Commissioner concluded.

Inspector Augustine Kerabe Belfon has been directed to conduct the investigation, which is expected to reveal what caused the incident and, equally important, what prompted the reaction of the police.
