ST GEORGE’S Grenada: Prime Minister Tillman Thomas on Thursday met with a visiting Congressional delegation from China, headed by the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress, Li Zhaoxing.

In welcoming Li Zhaoxing to Grenada, Thomas spoke of the warm and friendly relations between the two countries and thanked China for assisting Grenada in developing and resuscitating the island’s agricultural sector among other areas of cooperation.

“China has provided significant assistance to Grenada in agriculture, music and the rebuilding of our National Stadium,” the Prime Minister said.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the one China policy and gave his support to calls for reforming the United Nations and the democratization of the United Nations Security Council.

“There seems to be strong support to make the United Nations Security Council more democratic. The World has changed and the UN must adapt to the new realities,” he said.

He welcomed the assistance from China for the musical improvement of the Royal Grenada Police Force Band and spoke to the delegation about a larger plan for the development of music as part of Grenada’s tourism product.

“We want to use music a part of the expansion of our tourism product, particularly among our young people. We need to get them more engaged and we believe there is a need to take our music project into our communities,” he told the delegation.

For his part, the Chinese official said there was much in common between Grenada and China, including recognition of the United Nations Charter and respect for human rights.

He expressed Beijing’s appreciation to Grenada for its support and sympathy during the earthquake that devastated China, specifically mentioning the contribution from Westmorland Primary School.

Both Thomas and Zhaoxing committed to assisting each other’s countries in times of disaster.
