Despite reports from Grenada’s Minister of Finance that the treasury was empty, the country's teachers received more than $2.2 million dollars in back pay due to them for the period January to December 2006.
The payment is consistent with the agreement between the government and the Grenada Union of Teachers signed last June.
In addition, one off payments for 2007 were made to public officers in the sum of nearly two million dollars.
The Grenada Broadcasting Corporation radio station reported that retroactive payments for the period 2006-2007 due to the cooks for the School Feeding Programme are currently being arranged in the sum of $150,000.00.
With these payments, the government has already paid more than $20 million in retroactive payments to various public officers and civil servants in 2008.
Contrary to rumours, all public officers and civil servants were paid on time for the month of August.
