The Ministry of Agriculture has earmarked a limited number of nutmeg plants for distribution to non-traditional nutmeg farmers who may be interested in cultivating nutmeg on a small scale.

The Ministry will provide between 5 – 10 plants to interested persons on a first come, first served basis and based on the size of the plot of land. The plants will be available from Thursday 27th November, 2008 until Monday 1st December, 2008, at the Maran Propagation Station and will be distributed between 9:00 a. – 12:00 noon.

The distribution of nutmeg plants to non-traditional nutmeg farmers is part of the Ministry’s strategy to get more and younger persons involved in agriculture and to seek to revitalize the nutmeg industry.
Agriculture Minister Hon. Michael Lett said the resuscitation of the nutmeg industry is one of the pillars of the agriculture industry.

“There is a lot of potential in nutmegs and nutmeg production. It is one of the base products for the expansion of our manufacturing sector. It is also important because there are several high value by products which can be used as inputs into secondary products on the international market,” the Minister said.
