Notice to all visitors.
The content about the former Paradise
Inn Carriacou has been unavailable for some time. The webhosting and maintenance, design and all other costs related have never been paid by the hotel owner
Peter A.
The deal we had (free lodging in return for a good website) was not honoured by
him, nor the promised pay of my flight to Carriacou.
My experiences in this ''hotel'' have been horrendous and even resulted in
personal attacks and theft of my property.
I got seriously harrassed during my last stay in this place.
My hammock was cut to pieces, and I received severe threats of what would happen
if I didn't give this website in their hands.
(it is my duty as hotel manager to obtain your access details for the
website, Mrs. Brenda P. would later state).
Indeed, things got even worse...
During my stay I witnessed severe animal maltreatment, turtles and iguana were
used for food, and two puppies got
brutally killed by the kitchen chef. (On orders of Mrs. Brenda P.)
All that was enough for me to remove the hotel recommendations and reservation
page from this site.
But... I got several requests from visitors to make the Carriacou information easily accesible again.
I keep these pages online now.
As before, the Paradise Inn-related content will stay offline,
The former pleasant hotel Paradise Inn does not exist as such anymore.
It is now completely rundown and staff is unfriendly, even hostile towards visitors. That is why I advise you not to visit this hell inn, but choose another
hotel for your vacation on Carriacou. |

Artists from Carriacou
Caribbean artists of Grenada Carriacou & St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Examples of art and biography
Canute Caliste
Mr. Canute Calliste (now deceased) is the best know artist outside the Grenadines. His work could be described as naïve, or
non-schooled.. his work depicts the way he sees the world oround him.
Unlike the artists that have been on art schools , he paints in a simplistic
way, without the schooled perspective and visual tricks that more educated
painters use. That is exactly his strongest virtue: uncomlicated use of
colours and composition, resulting in a refreshing view of Island life. Being
a man of respected age now, he still paints every day in his tiny house
overlooking the Caribbean waters.
When canute was a little boy (we now talk
about some 75 years ago) , he once saw a mermaid rising from the waters
, who told him that he had to become a painter. And so he did... he is
known to paint a large number of paintings per day, most of the
paintings depicting Island life and his most used subject, the Mermaid.
Canute Calliste's paintings are being collected by people all over the
world, one of the collectors being the Queen of England.
Following is an exerpt from
http://www.egallery.com/canute.html
Canute Caliste, now in his nineties, has been painting a catalogue of enjoyment and recording the tumultous, warm
working life of his family and friends in the small Grenadine island of
Carriacou since he was nine years old. He plays on his violin in the
quadrille band, builds boats - there is usually a skiff under
construction in his yard - and has been at sea for much of his life.
Caliste is recognized as among the greats of
the truly primitive painters, and is collected world-wide.
His works are
the subject of a great book: "The Mermaid Wakes," by Lora
Berg. An excerpt from the book: "Many words are used to describe the
work of primitive or naive painters but the more we try to define this,
the more it eludes us. As by a child's smile after tears, we are
arrested and cleansed by innocence. From his own experience and his
faithful love of the teeming family life around him, Canute Calixte
gives to us an explosive, humorous, and loving account of his tiny world
of Carriacou - and for this we thank him."
Other works by Canute Caliste have been
exhibited recently at the OAS Museum in Washington DC, Pedro De Osma
Museum in Lima, Peru, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in the
Dominican Republic. Mr. Caliste has been featured in "Caribbean Travel
and Life" magazine. |

Nutmegs
Botanical: Myristica fragrans (HOUTT.)
Family: N.O. Myristicaceae
---Synonyms---Nux Moschata. Myristica
officinalis (Linn.). Myristica aromata. Myristica.
---Part Used---Dried kernel of the seed.
---Habitat---Banda Islands, Malayan Archipelago, Molucca Islands,
and cultivated in Sumatra, French Guiana and Grenada.
---Description---The
tree is about 25 feet high, has a greyish-brown smooth bark, abounding
in a yellow juice. The branches spread in whorls - alternate leaves, on
petioles about 1 inch long, elliptical, glabrous, obtuse at base -
acuminate, aromatic, dark green and glossy above, paler underside and 4
to 6 inches long. Flowers dioecious, small in axillary racemes.
Peduncles and pedicles glabrous. Male flowers three to five more on a
peduncle. Calyx urceolate, thick and fleshy, covered with an indistinct
reddish pubescence dingy pale yellow, cut into three erect teeth. Female
flowers differ little from the male, except pedicel is often solitary.
Fruit is a pendulous, globose drupe, consisting of a succulent pericarp
- the mace arillus covering the hard endocarp, and a wrinkled kernel
with ruminated endosperm. When the arillus is fresh it is a brilliant
scarlet, when dry more horny, brittle, and a yellowish-brown colour. The
seed or nutmeg is firm, fleshy, whitish, transversed by red-brown veins,
abounding in oil. The tree does not bloom till it is nine years old,
when it fruits and continues to do so for seventy-five years without
attention. In Banda Islands there are three harvests, the chief one in
July or August, the next in November, and the last in March or April.
The fruit is gathered by means of a barb attached to a long stick. The
mace is separated from the nut and both are dried separately. The nutmeg
or kernel of the fruit and the arillus or mace are the official parts.
After the mace is removed, the nutmegs are
dried on gratings, three to six weeks over a slow charcoal fire - but
are often sun-dried for six days previously. The curing protects them
from insects.
