Tibeau cemetery on Carriacou
Graves swallowed by the sea in Tibeau on Carriacou

From the Carriacou encyclopedia .

In Tibeau , Carriacou , you will find a cemetery right on the beach at Jews Bay.

This cemetary is currently in danger from sand mining and beach erosion.
Attached is a picture of the unprotected graves.

Visit the Ningo Well which is is one of the earliest wells built on Carriacou and has interesting stonework.
Plantation ruins are nearby.

The Tibeau cemetery is endangered by sand mining.

The issue of sand mining has taken on a serious turn which urgently warrants the authorities to come up with a readily available alternative for not only the truckers, but Contractors and would be home and business owners before forcing scores of people on the bread line when they have to put food on the family table.

While the desecration of the Tibeau Cemetery, where most of the sand comes from, is one of great sadness, those in authorities must now step forward with hast to save the livelihood of the truckers.

On Monday seven truckers were caught and brought to the police station for removing sand from the area which is now forbidden.

This has angered the men who admitted that while it bleeds their hearts to continue with such a practice from the area they are left with no other choice .

They stated that there is no sand in Sabazan and described the area as one of a muddy beach.

At Grandbay they said they are being warned on several occasions by property owners in the area to avoid trespassing on their land which leads to the sand.

The totally upset men, after emerging from a meeting with Superintendent Dragon, then picketed the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs where they were given a listening ear by Permanent Secretary, Bernadette Sylvester.

However, the truckers stated that while they are willing to adhere to the law those in authority must also show some compassion for them particularly when considering that they are the bread winners in their family.

Spokesman for the truckers, Dave Peters, said that the situation is one of great frustration. He added that they are urgently requesting a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs to look at ways of resolving the issue.

Peters said that a country cannot enjoy a construction boom if sand is not available for the projects. Peters, along with the men, asked what should they do in order to maintain the sand mining law while at the same time provide for their families.

Jouvert

Jouvert. Revellers smeared with mud and paint.

With Carnival on february 4 and 5 in 2008, here is some additional info for visitors of Carriacou.

Following description of Jouvert is from the Carriacou WIKI.
You can add or edit the content there.

J'Ouvert starts in the middle of the night.
Around 8 most people go for a nap, to continue with carnival at 12.

Jouvert is a part of carnival typical for the Caribbean islands. It is a heritage of the days of slavery.
In those years the plantation owners used to celebrate carnival with fancy clothes and masquerades. The slaves who saw the exposure of such wealth started to make their own variant, with probably the intention of ridiculizing the whites with their fancy clothes. So instead of dressing up nicely, they decided to cover themselves with mud, clothing themselves in rags or clothes made out of natural materials like palm leaves.

J'ouvert Music The music that accompanied the J'ouvert was, and still often is, homemade and often consisting of heavy metal objects like car rims heavy bolts and ironwork.

The sound which is produced is often astonishing correct and finely tuned.

J'Ouvert has an aspect of wild behaviour, but on the contrary on the islands of Grenada there are hardly ever serious incidents during the night. Other music popular during J'ouvert is Pan Music and Soca. Unlike during Carnival itself , during J'ouvert Reggae music is "not done"

Soca Is the typical music at Carnival.

J'ouvert - a contraction of the French jour ouvert, or day open (morning) - is a large street party during carnival in the eastern Caribbean region. J'ouvert is celebrated on many islands, including Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Sint Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

The festival starts well before dawn and peaks a few hours after sunrise when revelers have tired out or been bludgeoned into submission by strong rum.

Part of the tradition involves smearing paint, mud, or oil on the participants known as Jab Jabs. This is done in remembrance of a civil disturbance in Port of Spain, Trinidad, when the people smeared themselves with oil to avoid being recognized.

J'ouvert is also a feature of New York City's Labor Day Parade held in Brooklyn.

Peter De Savary vows to help Grenada lure airline to replace carrier LIAT
User Rating: / 0
ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada: A British resort developer says he'll put up bond money to help Grenada attract an alternative to LIAT, a regional air carrier that islanders complain is plagued by tardy service, canceled flights and high ticket prices. "We are willing to put up hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars in the form of bonds to the airlines to guarantee the airlines that they don't lose any money if they bring the planes to Grenada," Peter de Savary said Sunday during a conference call. De Savary, whose Skibo Castle in Scotland was chosen as the spot of Madonna's 2000 wedding to filmmaker Guy Ritchie, owns resorts and marinas that have helped Grenada's tourism-based economy recover from devastating hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. Grenada's prime minister, Keith Mitchell, has said Grenada may partner with other Caribbean islands to provide a substitute for LIAT, which is owned by several regional governments including Barbados, Antigua, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Representatives of LIAT, which merged last year with the struggling Caribbean Star carrier, did not immediately return calls made Monday to its headquarters in Antigua or to its commercial office in Barbados. LIAT flight attendants stranded hundreds of passengers throughout the region last month by staging a one-day sickout to press pension-fund demands. Grenadian Tourism Minister Clarice Modeste-Curwen on Saturday called for LIAT to apologize to passengers for poor service. gebruiksvoorwaarden
