The windward islands
The windward islands chain in the Caribbean
There are several explanations for this descriptive name of these islands.

1.>> The Caribbean Windward Islands are so named due to being on the windier and wetter side of the Lesser Antilles

2. WIKIPEDIA >> The Windward Islands are called such because they were more windward to sailing ships arriving in the New World than the Leeward Islands, given that the prevailing trade winds in the West Indies blow east to west.

Together all the Windward and Leeward Islands make up the Caribbean islands known as the Lesser Antilles.

The trans-Atlantic currents and winds that provided the fastest route across the ocean brought these ships to the rough dividing line between the Windward and Leeward islands.

Vessels in the Atlantic slave trade departing from the African Gold Coast and Gulf of Guinea would first encounter the southeasternmost islands of the Lesser Antilles in their west-northwesterly heading to final destinations in the Caribbean and North and Central America.

Today the Windward islands of the West Indies are one of the World's most popular tourist travel destinations with a huge demand within the Caribbean cruise industry.

The region enjoys high temperatures all year around and attracts large numbers of people seeking a holiday in an idyllic tropical Caribbean island paradise.
